1 Peter 4:9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.
What is hospitality?
It’s opening our homes to each other (welcoming strangers) WITHOUT complaining or grumbling. During Thanksgiving we discussed how to open up our homes to others, what we wanted the atmosphere to be like, and how we wanted to love on those that entered our front doors.
In the New Testament, the Greek word translated “hospitality” literally means “love of strangers.” Hospitality was usually show by sharing a meal with the oppressed.
Matthew 25:35-36: For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
Luke 14:12-14: Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
What effect does hospitality have those who are suffering?
1. It helps restore their dignity. Often when we suffer we feel alone, an outcast and unworthy. We feel ashamed of what we are going through.
2. It helps them overcome loneliness. Walking into someone else’s suffering can be hard. Satan uses our times of loneliness and isolation to tempt us, to harm us, and tell us lies.
3. It counteracts the identity crisis suffering brings. It tells the person suffering that you want to see the growth in them. You want to see the person they are becoming. Suffering changes us.
4. Brings blessings. Not only to the person who is receiving the hospitality but also to the person giving it.
Who in your life can you share a meal with? How are you going to offer hospitality to this week?
