updating our 1980s kitchen

today i wanted to share with you a few snapshots of the progress as we are updating our 1980s kitchen
when we moved into our new house, i knew the very first thing to go was the kitchen wallpaper. even if that was the only thing we could do in 2013 it was a must.
just looking at the pictures of this wallpapers makes me dizzy all over again. (pictures from house listing)

1980s kitchen

i only lasted 3 days in the house with the overwhelming lovely vine wallpaper. before this house i had never removed wall paper. i was terrified after hearing horror stories from friends and family. but off to lowes i went and bought their wallpaper remover stuff. i later learned that each room is different when removing this wonderful decoration. but thankfully for me, my kitchen was de-wallpaperd in about 3 hours. except for a small area that i was not tall enough to reach. yes i need to get a ladder.

and before you haters call me out, yes this little patch of wall paper stayed like this for about 8 weeks. what can i say we start fierce and end slow. I have been sharing bit by bit small snippets of our house redo. you can catch up on them by following the #boermanhouseredo

our long term plan is to eventually redo/replace counter tops, paint all the cabinets and trim white, , use white subway tiles as a back splash, and replace the hardware with something brushed nickel. i love the idea of an all white or mostly white kitchen. I chose a paint color that was very subtle. halcyon blue. we decided to go with ceramic paint in a flat finish as it will be very durable.

I still have a light “decorating” to do in here to help rid the 80’s feel but for now it feels so much better!

  1. Taking the wallpaper down made a huge difference! It is a hard job. It was one one of the first things I did in our house when we moved in.
