Living in a fallen world can be difficult, ugly, cruel, and exhausting. Living as believers in a fallen world only amps up those feelings. Don’t get me wrong, not everyday feels like that. Most days are peaceful, full of love and joy, but it’s always there, the reminder that this is not our true home.
I wanted to share 3 key parts of chapter 2 that have helped me in my walk.
1. verses 2-3 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
crave meaning desire—it’s a command to desire.
What this means is that if you feel stuck because you don’t have the kind of spiritual desires that you should, this text says, You do not need to be stuck! It says, “Get them!—Get the desires you don’t have.” If you don’t desire the milk of the Word, start desiring it! via – John Piper
2. verses 11-12 Dear friends, you are like foreigners and strangers in this world. I beg you to avoid the evil things your bodies want to do that fight against your soul. People who do not believe are living all around you and might say that you are doing wrong. Live such good lives that they will see the good things you do and will give glory to God on the day when Christ comes again.
Our purpose is to bring glory to God. It’s that simple.
1 Samuel 12:22 For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.
Isaiah 43:20-21 – The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.
Look closely at verse 12. We are an extension of God. We are to live our lives so that others may see God in our lives.
Matthew 5:16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven.
Jesus is our light, and we need to be a light to others. as John Piper stated in 1987 “DOING GOOD DEEDS BEFORE AN ONLOOKING WORLD IS A NECESSARY PART OF DECLARING GOD’S MARVELOUS WORKS AND MAKING HIM A NAME ON THE EARTH.”
3. verse 17 Show respect for all people: Love the brothers and sisters of God’s family, respect God, honor the king.
Peter is telling us to show respect to ALL people, not just the good ones, not only fellow believers, but ALL people. That respect may look different for each people but respect should be shown none the less. Peter is also telling us to love our brothers and sisters in Christ. We have a special relationship with them and it needs to be full of love.
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
We are to fear God. For He is our creator, our father, our King.
Psalm 111:10 he fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Honor our King, Ah yes the King of Kings. He is above ALL.
Romans 13:1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
We are blessed to be children of such an amazing God. One who we can call Father and also our King.
