in need of your help

my coffee update:

So I did it. I bought a coffee maker. It was on sale at Kohl’s and with my 20% off discount I got a sweet deal. Needless to say, I was thrilled about my purchase! I brought it home and realized we have coffee grounds, coffee cups, a coffee maker, but no filters. So back to the store I go. I purchased coffee filters and a few more creamers in case we run out (I already had 5 in the fridge) now that we can make lots of coffee.

That night I stayed up late running the clean water through the machine. Researching how much coffee to use in the filter and getting it all programmed for Jake to use before he headed to work that night. I was in bed by the time he left but noticed there was coffee left for me to reheat in the morning. I did just that and added my new sugar and spice creamer. After taking my first sip I am almost spit it all out. It was the worst tasting coffee I have ever had. Two days later was Christmas I as asking my Mom how much coffee to use because mine tasted bad and Jake finally said “yeah that was horrible coffee”. He is so sweet that he did not tell me that first day I made horrible coffee!

So today we had family over for Christmas and we made coffee. We did ask how much they use and tried that. No one ended up wanting coffee so Jake and I had some after they left. Boy, were they lucky. Again this did not taste good. 

So Blog readers what do I do? How do I make good coffee? I am not a strong coffee person and neither is Jake but mild to medium is fine with us. I have a 12 cup coffee maker and only plan to make 6-8 cups at a time. We have Folders medium roast coffee grounds. What are your suggestions?

  1. I would stop buying foldgers and go with a better brand, then use the 1/4 to 1/3 per pot (6-8 cups). you have hard water–ie high calcium. Foldgers can be bitter when made with that water.

  2. 1/2 a cup for 12 cups. 1/4 for 6 cups. 🙂

  3. A good rule of thumb is one scoop a coffee per 2 cups of water. I like my coffee strong so I use more than that. Also it might be the coffee that you are brewing too. You might want to invest in some better coffee thus producing a better tasting cup of coffee. I like Starbucks and Schul’s.   4. If you were making 8 cups of coffee, I would start with 4 tbsp. of grounds and go up from there.

  5. well, I believe that whenever my parents make coffee, they use 3 TBS of the regular coffee. I never liked coffee back in the day… so I don’t know if it ever tasted good or bad. Good luck!
